About Us
Cultural Synagogue is a Humanistic Jewish community serving Portland, Oregon, and Southwest Washington. We celebrate Jewish identity, ritual, history, and culture through our holiday gatherings and lifecycle ceremonies. Our Shabbat services, holiday celebrations, and adult and youth programs take place in Southeast Portland.
We embrace the philosophy of Humanistic Judaism, which emphasizes human experience and community rather than a divine entity. We modify traditional liturgy and utilize or create original religious literature for our holidays and ceremonies. Cultural Synagogue is affiliated with the Society for Humanistic Judaism.

Humanistic Judaism is my Jewish home.
What does it mean to have a Jewish home? Of course, it includes participating in Shabbat & Holidays, lifecycle ceremonies, learning, and community. For me it also includes a human centered philosophy and practice that makes it our responsibility to make the world a better place.

Rabbi Mary
Ordained by the International Institute for Secular Humanistic Judaism.
Programs and Services
Adult education classes are taught by Rabbi Mary and explore the practice of Humanistic Judaism.
(Ages 11-13): This program prepares students for their B'nai Mitzvah (a gender-neutral, non-binary term for “Bar Mitzvah” and “Bat Mitzvah”) with a focus on Jewish history, ethics, and the significance of the ceremony.
Our Cultural School program offers a fun and engaging way for young children to learn about Jewish holidays, traditions, and values. Music education is included. We hold twice-monthly classes for our youth who are ages six to eleven.
Volunteer Opportunities
We seek a future where the dignity and freedom of every human being is upheld. We act to repair the world through community and individual service that advances human rights, opposes prejudice and advocates for the separation of church and state. Our Social Action Group meets regularly to identify and plan for volunteer opportunities in the local community.
Community Events
Our congregation is a vibrant, welcoming community, and we encourage everyone to get involved with our educational programs. Whether you are new to Humanistic Judaism or looking to deepen your knoweldge and connection, there is a place for you here.
